Tango Art

I began painting dancers of Argentine tango six years ago, soon after starting to learn this most evocative and passionate of dances.

My work is informed by my own experience on the dance floor and by many years of drawing and painting the human figure.

Argentine Tango has become most widely known though the medium of 'Show Tango', danced across the world on the stage and in demonstrations by professionals. This form of the dance dazzles the audience with displays of choreographed viruosity. By contrast, the social tango in the dance halls of Buenos Aires (the 'milongas') is an intimate dance and, while the interplay of bodies and legs of skilled dancers may entrance the casual observer, the less obvious interplay within the embrace of the dancing couple is at the heart of the dance. It is this hidden intimacy of the tango embrace that I am striving to capture in my paintings and drawings.
